There are two types of Goat Show - recognised and unrecognised.
Recognised shows (aka BGS Shows) are recognised by the British Goat Society (BGS) and are run under their strict rules and regulations. Judges must be BGS-licenced, goats must be BGS-registered and there is usually a milking competition. Goats can win awards which contribute towards the gaining of titles such as Breed Champion. Results of recognised shows are published nationally in the BGS Journal (usually monthly). All shows run by the NIGC are recognised, together with the Goat Classes at Balmoral Show and Castlewellan Show. The only other recognised show in Ireland is organised by the Irish Goat Producers Association and usually held in Kells, Co Meath.
Unrecognised shows are exemplified by the goat classes at most agricultural shows. Judges do not have to be licenced, there are classes for unregistered (non-pedigree) goats and there are no milking competitions.
